Soenen manufactured 2 laser welding machines for welding seat
rack profiles to connect passenger seats in the new Dream Liner 787
airplane from Boeing. The usage of non-uniform, sinusoidal shaped
Titanium profiles is one of the many weight saving regulations
Boeing has implemented in order to reduce the total weight of the
plane.
Boeing developed these profiles for one single purpose: a maximum
rigid structure combined with an ultra low weight. This resulted in
a sinusoidal profile and seats are connect where this profile
reaches its highest point.
For this challenging project there was a close cooperation between
Soenen and Voestalpine for designing, manufacturing and prototyping
the installation: System Design is carried out by Voestalpine and
Soenen is responsible for the detailed design and prototyping. Both
machines are equipped with a Trumpf Nd-YAG 6 kW laser.
One of our machines, which critical system is also patented, is
designed for welding a horizontal positioned Titanium flange sheet
together with another Titanium 2 legged PI-profile with sinusoidal
shape.
